Selen Gülün & Ulrich Drechsler
Selen Gülün began her musical education at the age of 7 at Istanbul Municipality Conservatory part-time Piano Performance Department. She continued her musical education at Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory in 1992, studying Piano and Composition, Selen Gülün left for Berklee College of Music on a talent scholarship. There she studied Jazz Composition and formed the quintet Just About Jazz which performs her own original compositions. Their album Just About Jazz, Live has released at 2005. She graduated with a special degree in two years, with honors, from Berklee College of Music Jazz Composition Department. She has been the music department faculty member of Istanbul Bilgi University. She finished her MA in Composition at Istanbul Technical University, MIAM program, studying with Pieter Snapper, Mark Wingate and Kamran Ince. Selen Gülün works actively as a composer and a performer in different styles of Contemporary Music. She regularly performs in Clubs and Festivals in and outside of Turkey.
ULRICH DRECHSLER BIOGRAPHY
Ulrich Drechsler started playing the clarinet at the age of nine. In order to get prepared for a classical conservatory he studied with a clarinet teacher of the opera house in Stuttgart. At the age of sixteen he taught himself to the tenor saxophone, leading him to focus more on improvised music. Between 1992 and 1998 he studied in Graz at the University of Arts. He chose the bass clarinet as main instrument. The broad experiences made in his student years mirrors in his versatile projects. Short after
arriving in Vienna he founded the trio Café Drechsler with drummer Alex Deutsch and bassist Oliver Steger which caused international furore. Ulrich Drechsler has a strong bond with the music of Thelonious Monk. He put together the group The Monk In All Of Us that committed itself fully to interpreting the musical oeuvre of this great genius of jazz history. With this fantastic group, featuring long-term companions Oliver Steger, Jörg Mikula and the extraordinary Norwegian piano player Tord Gustavsen, Ulrich Drechsler presented his original compositions for the very first time. The debut album "Humans & Places" got raving reviews both from audience and critics. In 2009 Ulrich presented a new line-up of his Nu Jazz band "DRECHSLER" together with a new album entitled "The Big Easy".
